Coin rolls

"Randu naalu dinam kondorutthaney

Thandiletti nadathunnathum bhavaan

Maalika mukaleriya mannante

Tholil maaraappu kettunnathum bhavaan"

The above lines are excerpts taken from Jnanapana, a poem written by a revered philosophical poet,Poonthanam Namboothiri, depicting the transient nature of life. The meaning of this short poem is within two to four days God can make a person rich, and sametime god can pull down a person from their ivory tower to shelter home.

As we age, life teaches us many lessons, and this was one among them for me. I have read about the plight of the famous yesteryear actress Savitri of the Tamil cinema industry. She was a person who earned a lot during her peak years as an actress and used to ride and travel in the luxury cars of her time. But in the later years of her life, she had to face setbacks, lost everything she had earned, and finally she was pulled in a cart drawn by a horse and died a pauper. This is known to many of us.

When the Oscar-winning movie "Slumdog Millionaire" was released, many people including myself, considered it impossible. But recently, I myself witnessed this. A lady from our native place was living in a rented house, with no property and no parents was loved by a person who took her abroad, fetched her a job, and now became a crorepati heiress.

At the same time, another lady of the same family, who was a crorepati, got stuck in legal issues and became a pauper and even had to beg for food.

On witnessing this incident, which exactly confirms the meaning of the above poem, I came to acknowledge the reality that "Coin rolls". Finally, I also came to believe that there is an invisible power, which everybody calls God, who rolls the coin. From then onwards I am trying to be a spiritual person, of course not for the coins to roll toward me. But to create a mentality of relying more on spiritual power than on human beings.
